1905 Sun Master Roadster

1905 Sun Master Model

Double Top Tube Heavy Duty Gents Roadster

26″ Frame

28″ Wheels

(Now sold)

Like BSA, the Sun Cycle Fittings Co was a major supplier of cycle components. Local bike shops could build their own frame using Sun components, or buy a Sun frame too and add their own transfer.

This allowed customers to deal with a local concern, have a bike built to their own specifications, but still end up with a quality machine.

Notice the price in the catalogue description (further down the page). And observe its statement: ‘The specification and finish of this machine is equal to any ten guinea line.’

The equivalent of ten guineas (£10 10/-) in 1905 is £1114 in 2014. That was expensive for a new bicycle, though the quality manufacturers charged this price and more:

The price of a 1905 Sunbeam was 14 guineas, and an Imperial Triumph £13 10/- (or £15 10/- with a two-speed gear).

So buying a machine that used quality components but in ‘knock-down’ form for local assembly represented a real saving: in this case, the bike cost only 5 guineas.

This particular example used Sun’s own frame, and is the oldest machine known to the Sun Register.

FRONT INVERTED LEVER BRAKE

The page above describes the brakes as ‘Ecco’ system. I mentioned Ecco in my history of Abingdon King Dick:

Abingdon King Dick has a long history: Coxeter and Sons (bicycles, etc.) of Abingdon had become Abingdon Works Co. Ltd. by 1875; Albert Eadie Chain Co. had become ECCO (get it?) Works Ltd. in 1897; these two merged into Abingdon-Ecco Ltd. (bicycles, motorcycles, tools) in 1906, changing name to Abingdon Works Ltd.
