The history of the Hercules Cycle & Motor Co Ltd provides some very interesting insights into the cycle trade in the early years of the twentieth century. The Hercules marque enthusiast and respected cycle historian Andrew Millward has written an article on the subject, which I have reproduced here.

Andrew was actually standing next to me when I purchased this bicycle some years ago. We were at a vintage bicycle auction and discussed who would bid for what so that we did not bid against each other. He bought a Lady’s Centaur and I ended up with this wonderfully original Hercules.
