1937 Elswick Hopper Safety Model 24 STG Sports Tourist
3-Speed Sturmey Archer Model AW7
Elswick Hopper cycles had an excellent reputation for the quality of their paintwork: ‘Famous for Finish’ was their motto.
This 1937 example certainly bears out their testimony. Despite 76 years on the road, the original paintwork is hardly worn and, after a polish, has come up shining. Even the transfers (decals) – on the headstock, chaincase, seat tube and rear mudguard – have survived intact.
The bicycle is in excellent order throughout. I bought it in 2008 – I find it hard to resist any bicycle from the golden age of British manufacturing still nearly as good as when it came out of the factory. The chrome is starting to tarnish now, after five years storage, but I’m inspired to get it out to ride it again, and another good polish will soon see it shine.
