1910s-1920s James Cycle Co Edwardian Gentleman’s Tricycle



Tricycles from the Edwardian era were well-built machines, and there are still quite a few of them around 90-100 years later; however, the ones you see now are nearly all lady’s loop-frame models. It’s very rare to find a Gentleman’s tricycle, with a crossbar, such as the machine featured here.

Tricycles were not big sellers at the time, were expensive to manufacture, and featured infrequently in catalogues. They were usually made to special order, so a customer could order a tricycle to his own specification. This one is fixed wheel, with the interesting result that you can pedal it backwards as well as forward.

Its two brakes both act on the front wheel, one being a caliper and the other a drum.

This James has a long wheelbase, so the riding position is very comfortable; this also seems to create a greater stability when riding.

I’m not sure of the exact year of production, nor the actual model. But the James Cycle Co head-badge is in good condition, as is the rest of the machine, both cosmetically and mechanically.

I’m not sure if the paint is original or whether it was repainted many years ago. The saddle is a comfortable Dunlop in good condition. Tyres are 26 x 1 1/2.

I’ve shipped tricycles internationally, though this requires them to be completely dismantled to fit into a bike box, ie you’d need to re-assemble the rear axle after you receive it.

All my bikes are serviced before or after sale. New tyres/ tubes are provided if necessary.

This is a superb machine. It’s not only a great collector’s piece and an excellent investment, but is also an interesting way to experience driving in Edwardian times …at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a motorcycle or car of the period. With a tweed jacket, plus-fours and a flat cap you’ll soon be savouring the vehicular pleasures of a forgotten era.
