1952 Columbia 5-Star Superb Anniversary Model RX-5

Manufactured in 1986 recreating the famous Columbia 5-Star

The 1952 Columbia 5-Star Superb Men’s Motorbike was America’s best-loved bicycle.

In 1986, to commemorate their 110 year anniversary, Columbia made a limited edition (5000 production run) reproduction of its popular 1952 Five Star model.

The 1952 model, in green and cream, had itself been made to celebrate Columbia’s 75th anniversary.

Although there were a few variations – the headlight and gooseneck stem were different – the original dies used in the 1952 model were still around, and the sheet metal parts were made by McCauley Metal Products, just like the original bicycle. The frames, forks, rims and most of the rest of the bike were manufactured in the Westfield Columbia factory. So the bicycle is mostly a faithful reproduction.

One of the hopes for this bike was to stimulate a slumping U.S. bicycle market. Import bikes were selling in department stores for less money than one could be made in the U.S. For years Columbia had made lower end department store bikes for the kids market, and now they could not compete with the imports. Columbia Mfg. was losing the war and needed to do something. It was felt the answer was to return to making high-end bike shop bikes and they felt the RX-5 would be the thing to get them noticed. Unfortunately, recreating this bike did not prevent the bankruptcy that the Coilumbia suffered a year later.
