In 1926, Motobecane’s largest engine was only a 308cc two-stroke. Observing a demand for a large capacity machine, they had no time to design their own. Blackburne engines, meanwhile, had an excellent reputation. Burney Blackburne Ltd had stopped production of motorcycles, but still sold their engines to other companies. As a result of racing successes with Blackburne-powered machines (eg Norris, Beart and Jackson), there were excellent reports in the press.

So in 1927 Motobecane fitted 350cc and 500cc Blackburne engines to their 308cc frame, in order to get a machine onto the market as fast as possible; this was a flat-tank model. In 1928, they built a new frame, as a saddle tank model, which continued until 1929. An OHV 500cc Blackburne was built in 1930, but then production ceased.

An interesting fact is that, although Blackburne originally supplied Motobecane with 500cc engines, because they had a surplus of them at the time, by the end of the contract they were actually supplying 550cc engines instead. Motobecane did not amend their sales details, so maybe customers were not aware of this.

I checked the engine number FG 5083 with the Blackburne marque specialist and he confirms that this is a 1928 550cc.

All Blackburne-powered motorcycles are now much sought-after by collectors. The engine has a first-class reputation. The Motobecane Blackburne is no exception. With its Druid forks and French styling, the machine is an interesting example of late twenties motorcycle design. If you have an individual taste in vintage machines, and in particular rare motorcycles that are just that bit different, it’s hard not to like this fabulous old beast.

BURNEY BLACKBURNE LTD

Cecil and Alec Burney founded Blackburne Motorcycles in 1913 at Tongham near Farnham, Surrey. They were also a major supplier of engines to other motor cycle and light car makers and continued to make these until 1937.

They ceased production of complete Blackburne machines in 1922, and set up Burney motorcycles in 1923. According to Tragasch, the Burney machines featured external flywheel 497cc sidevalve engines.
