1929 Motobecane Type H BLACKBURNE 500cc Sidevalve

FOR MINOR RESTORATION

In 1926, Motobecane’s largest engine was only a 308cc two-stroke. Observing a demand for a large capacity machine, they had no time to design their own. Blackburne engines, meanwhile, had an excellent reputation. Burney Blackburne Ltd had stopped production of motorcycles, but still sold their engines to other companies. As a result of racing successes with Blackburne-powered machines (eg Norris, Beart and Jackson), there were excellent reports in the press. So in 1927 Motobecane fitted 350cc and 500cc Blackburne engines to their 308cc frame, in order to get a machine onto the market as fast as possible; this was a flat-tank model. In 1928, they built a new frame, as a saddle tank model, which continued until 1929. An OHV 500cc Blackburne was built in 1930, but then production ceased.

All Blackburne-powered motorcycles are now much sought-after by collectors. The engine has a first-class reputation. The Motobecane Blackburne is no exception. With its Druid forks and French styling, the machine is an interesting example of late twenties motorcycle design. If you have an individual taste in vintage machines, and in particular rare motorcycles that are just that bit different, it’s hard not to like this fabulous old beast.

BURNEY BLACKBURNE LTD

Cecil and Alec Burney founded Blackburne Motorcycles in 1913 at Tongham near Farnham, Surrey. They were also a major supplier of engines to other motor cycle and light car makers and continued to make these until 1937.

They ceased production of complete Blackburne machines in 1922, and set up Burney motorcycles in 1923. According to Tragasch, the Burney machines featured external flywheel 497cc sidevalve engines.

One of my French pals found this motorcycle for me; he cleaned it up and started the engine. I collected it from France at the weekend and it is now back in Brighton. As you can see from the photos, it’s in good condition all round, but has been in storage for many decades and requires ‘fettling.’ I’ll take it to my mechanic next week and he’ll do whatever is necessary. Once it has been prepared for the road, I’ll increase the sale price accordingly. However …if a fellow enthusiast wishes to purchase it now and service it themselves, it can be purchased at the advertised price.

BLACKBURNE 500cc SIDEVALVE ENGINE & BRIDIER-CHARRON GEARBOX

The magneto and carburettor are in good condition. The Mag is a Morel, which is considered in France to be the best in the world.

Gearbox options for this model were Burman, Staub or Bridier-Charron. This one is fitted with the Bridier-Charron gearbox, considered far superior to a Burman.

A FEW SMALL PARTS

Lights were an option; but here is a lighting set if required. The exhaust silencer can also be fitted if preferred. The toolbox is unpainted, but other wise complete and ready to fit to the rear carrier. The lever is for the advance-retard, requiring a cable to the magneto.

The Motobecane transfers are ready to fit to the tank.

VEHICLE CONDITION: Vintage vehicles are wonderful beasts

– but each has an individual personality and they sometimes have bad days just like you and me.
You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use one on a regular basis.

Two-strokes invariably need basic servicing before starting them, if they’ve been left to stand for more than 3 weeks or so.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
